Recognizing the Outlook Express Error

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

In order to understand what a particular MSOE error means, it is important to learn how to read an MSOE error message. The error message will appear in a dialog box and, usually, will not give the average user any real insight into the error that has occurred. Therefore, it is important to make a note of the error number, which is usually located at the end of the error message.

The remainder of this article will address MSOE problems by error number, as this is the most common ways to recognize a particular error.

General Errors

0x800CCC00: Authentication did not load

If you receive this error, reboot your computer and try to open the program again. Next, check “service status” for any mail problems. If the problem persists, it is possible that your mail account has become corrupt. Setup a new account in MSOE and re-enter your mail connection details.

0x800CCC01: Invalid certificate content or 0x800CCC02: Invalid certificate date

This error mans that the digital certification of your encrypted emails cannot be verified because your digital certificate is either out-of-date or has been revoked. Have your certificate re-issued or try recreating your mail account profile.

0x800CCC03: User already connected
This error means that the mail server believes that you are already logged into your mailbox. To correct, close all connections on all machines and wait about 20 minutes to reconnect. If you are not logged onto another computer then someone may be using your account or something may be wrong with the account. If this problem persists, recreate your mail account profile.

0x800CCC05: Not connected to server

This means that MSOE cannot communicate with the mail server. To correct this issue, be sure that you are connected to the Internet. If you are connected, double-check your mail server address. If you are not connected to the Internet, reconnect and try again.

0x800CCC0A: Incomplete

This error could possibly be the result of a corrupted pop3uidl file. To correct, close your Internet connection and all programs. Search for the file pop3uid.dbx and rename it pop3uid.xxx. Reconnect to the Internet and try loading MSOE again. If this does not work, reboot and try again.

If the pop3uidl is not the issue and the problem persists, it is possible that mail that is waiting in the mail server has been corrupted. This is often caused by a large file attachment or mail with missing headers. For Pop3 accounts, you may view the contents of your mailbox by accessing your mail via the Internet. This may allow you to identify the problem and delete the email that is causing the problem.

0x800CCC0B: Server or mail drop is busy

The mail server may be running slowly because of heavy email traffic. Wait 5 minutes and try again. If the problem continues, check the service status page to see if there is a known problem with the particular email service.

0x800CCC0D: Cannot locate server

To correct this issue, be sure that you are connected to the Internet. If you are connected, double-check your mail server address. If you are not connected to the Internet, reconnect and try again.

0x800CCC0E: Cannot connect to server

To correct this issue, be sure that you are connected to the Internet. If you are connected, double-check your mail server address. If you are not connected to the Internet, reconnect and try again.

0x800CCC0F: Connection closed

This error means that your modem or network was disconnected. If you access the Internet through a dial-up connection, there may be noise on your phone line and you may need updated modem drivers, or an init string. With other Internet connections, the problem may be with your network hardware or drivers.

0x800CCC10: Address not known on server

MSOE cannot deliver an email because the address is invalid. Check the spelling and format of the address and try again. You will need to delete the old message from your outbox to stop the error from repeating.

0x800CCC11: Mailing list not known on server

MSOE cannot deliver to a particular mailing list, possibly because one of the email addresses is invalid. Check the spelling and format of all addresses.

0x800CCC12 or 0x800CCC13 or 0x800CCC14 or 0x800CCC15: Winsock problems

This error usually means that there is a glitch in your network protocols. A common fix is to re-install your TCP/IP and sometimes a simple re-boot will correct the problem.

0x800CCC16: User account not recognized

This error usually means that your username and/or password are wrong. If they are correct, try setting up another identity with the same account details. If this works, the original account has been corrupted.

0x800CCC17: User canceled operation

This error occurs if you press cancel during the sending and receiving of email. If this problem continues, the file pop3uidl.dbx may have become corrupt. Search for the file pop3uid.dbx and rename it pop3uid.xxx. Reboot your system and reload MSOE.

0x800CCC18: Logon attempt failed

This error means that MSOE was rejected while attempting to connect to your mailbox. To correct this issue, verify your account information and make sure that the account is still active.

0x800CCC19: Timeout

This error is usually the result of a temporary glitch. Try rebooting your system and loading the program again. If the problem persists, the file pop3uidl.dbx may have become corrupt. Search for the file pop3uid.dbx and rename it pop3uid.xxx. Reboot your system and reload MSOE.

0x800CCC1A: Unable to connect using SSL

This error indicates a problem connecting using the “Secure Socket Layer” or “SSL”. To correct, turn off SSL in the Outlook Express settings.

Duplicate junk e-mail messages appear in the Junk E-mail folder in Outlook 2003

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

SYMPTOMS
You receive duplicate e-mail messages in your Junk E-mail folder in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 when all the following conditions are true:
• You have more than one instance of Outlook 2003 running on different computers, and all the instances are configured with the same Microsoft Exchange Server e-mail account.
• The junk e-mail protection level for your e-mail account is set to Safe Lists Only in Outlook 2003.
• Your Exchange Server does not filter incoming e-mail messages.
• All instances of Outlook 2003 use an Exchange Server e-mail account in Cached Exchange Mode.
• The sender of the e-mail message is not in your Safe Senders list in Outlook 2003.
• The sender of the e-mail message is not in your Contacts in Outlook 2003.
• The sender of the e-mail message is not in your Blocked Senders list in Outlook 2003.
• None of the recipients of the e-mail message are in your Trusted Recipients list in Outlook 2003

CAUSE
This problem occurs because Outlook 2003 has the junk e-mail protection level set to Safe Lists Only.

When you create a junk e-mail rule in Outlook 2003 with the junk e-mail protection level set to Safe Lists Only, the restriction structure (SRestriction) causes an Exchange Server that is running without junk e-mail filtering to decide if an e-mail message is junk e-mail or if it is not junk e-mail. Outlook 2003 then processes all the junk e-mail messages on the client side. If there is more than one instance of Outlook 2003 running, multiple copies of the same junk e-mail message can be moved from the Inbox to the Junk Mail folder while duplicates of the junk e-mail messages are created in the Junk E-mail folder.

RESOLUTION
This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest Microsoft Office 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.

Service pack information
This problem is corrected in Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1.

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2003. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Outlook 2007 - Default Mail Folders

Friday, October 10, 2008

If you send and receive email, you'll want to organize your mail in a way that makes sense to you and helps you locate stored email quickly. Likewise, you'll want a quick and easy way to separate unwanted junk mail from the messages that are important to you.
Outlook makes organizing your mail easy by using folders that can receive and store your mail according to the rules you establish.
You can view your Outlook window by simply clicking on the Mail button. By default, messages will appear on the right side of the Outlook window, but you can reconfigure Outlook to display your messages on the bottom of the Outlook window. To reconfigure the Outlook message window, choose View > Reading Pane and select Bottom. This will place your messages at the bottom of the Outlook window, with the message index directly above it. Folders and links to other utilities, like the calendar will appear on the left side of the Outlook window.
Outlook has a set of default folders, which you cannot delete or change. They are:

• Deleted Items

• Drafts

• Inbox

• Junk E-mail

• Outbox

• RSS Feeds

• Sent Items

• Search Folders
Numbers beside each folder show you how many unviewed items are in each folder. Folders that contain unread items will be highlighted in bold text as well. To view items in a folder, select the folder.
The message index will provide a list of items in the folder. As with the folder list, items that have not yet been viewed will be highlighted in bold text. The message index will also show you an icon that looks like an unopened envelope beside messages you have not yet read. The index will also indicate priority items, any alarms or reminders you have assigned to the message, the name of the sender, the subject line of the email, the date on the message, the size of the message in kilobytes or megabytes, and any categories you have assigned to the message. You can also flag a message that you want to handle at a later time. The flag serves as a visual reminder that additional tasks associated with the message are pending and you should not delete the message without handling the outstanding items.

Electronic Business Cards

Effortlessly add photos, company logos, or other personal information to your card so that the recipients have an easy way to identify and remember you and your business.

Improved E-Mail Control and Protection
Outlook 2007 helps you control your information while keeping you safer from junk mail and malicious sites. The junk e-mail filter, introduced in Outlook 2003, helps prevent junk e-mail messages from cluttering your Inbox. Outlook 2007 also features new anti-phishing features that disable threatening links and warn you about possibly malicious or phishing content within an e-mail message. For additional protection and security, Exchange Server 2007 acts as the first scan on incoming e-mail, determines the legitimacy of the e-mail message, and if applicable, disables links or URLs present in the e-mail message to help protect users.

Control Distribution of Sensitive Work
Help protect your company assets by preventing recipients from forwarding, copying, or printing important e-mail messages by using information rights management (IRM) functionality. You can even specify an expiration date for the message, after which it cannot be viewed or otherwise acted upon. (IRM functionality requires Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or later running Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services).

Maintain Compliance With Managed E-mail Folders
Exchange Server 2007 offers managed e-mail folders, a new approach to document retention, archiving, and regulatory compliance. You'll be able to see and interact with these folders just like any other mail folder, but the messages stored within them gain retention, archive, and expiration policies defined by the administrator. With managed e-mail folders, users and administrators can easily comply with various forms of external regulation and internal company policies regarding message retention.

Outlook 2007 E-mail Postmark
The Outlook 2007 E-mail Postmark helps ensure that e-mail reaching your inbox is legitimate and that e-mail you send will be trusted by the recipient's client. Creating mail with E-mail Postmark uses new technology that Microsoft has developed as part of the ongoing effort to curb junk mail. This technology asks the sender's computer to perform a computation or puzzle, and then assigns this work as a token of legitimacy to the e-mail message. These e-mail postmarks are designed to make it very time-consuming and technologically detrimental for users to send mass e-mail like spam, yet they do not change the user experience of sending e-mail.

Compression And Data Loss In Pst Files

Thursday, September 25, 2008

PST or Personal Storage Files is the extension of Microsoft Outlook files. These files are used to store Outlook data on the local hard drive of your computer. These personal data included mails, calendar, notes, schedule and contacts. These files are called PST as these are saved locally with .PST file name extension.

PST file are very useful as the store all the Outlook data. In order to access your Outlook data, you need to convert them in PST from OST (offline storage files stored on server). These files are very fast to communicate and take less space to store.

There is a drawback with PST file in Outlook 2002 and earlier versions that you can’t store PST files more than 2 GB. In later versions, this issue has fixed, but the performance of Outlook will decrease if the size of PST files will grow. In these cases, Outlook users have an alternative to compress the PST files. PST file compression is helpful in saving the disk space and making the communication and mail transfer easier. It is very important to compress the PST files with large size when you are sending them as an attachment.

In spite of giving benefits, sometimes PST file compression can lead to problems. It can corrupt your Outlook PST files. The PST file corruption due to compression generally occurs due to two reasons:

1. Halting the process of data compression
2. Editing the compressed PST files

If any of these situations take place, your PST files can corrupt and can become inaccessible. In these situations, you need to repair the corrupted Outlook PST files.

It is very critical situation of file corruption as you can’t repair these files using inbuilt PST repair tools like ScanPST.exe. But there is no need to worry about your Outlook PST files. You can repair these files using third party data recovery software that are available in the form of pst repair software.

Stellar Phoenix Outlook PST Repair is powerful yet easy to use pst recovery software. This software is helpful in repairing and restoring the corrupted Outlook PST files. This is a read only and non destructive data recovery software that doesn’t modifies the original contents of the PST files. This software can repair and restore the PST files in all possible cases of corruption or damage.

You can download the demo version of the software and can scan your corrupted PST files. The demo version of the software can preview the 5 mails and 20% of other contents of your Outlook data. This software is capable to repair all the contents of Outlook including mails, calendar, notes, tasks, schedule and contacts.

Turn an Outlook item into another type of item

Tuesday, April 1, 2008

You can also view an animated version of this procedure, Animation: Turn an Outlook item into another type of item.

Has this happened to you? You've had a lengthy e-mail conversation and now you realize a face-to-face meeting is necessary. Instead of creating a new meeting request and then copying and pasting text from the e-mail message, you can use the Outlook AutoCreate feature to quickly create a meeting request and capture all the information in your e-mail thread. And best of all, AutoCreate lets you convert any item into an item of another type, such as a contact into a task or a note into an appointment.

Step to Turn an Outlook item into another type of item

  1. Drag the message onto the Calendar icon on the Outlook Bar.
  2. Enter the location for the meeting, and then make any changes and select any additional options you want on the Appointment tab. (Relevant information from the message has already been added to fields in the new meeting request. The entire message appears in the meeting text box.)
  3. On the Actions menu, click Invite Attendees.
  4. Enter a name or names in the To box.
  5. Click Send.

That's it. You've turned an e-mail message into a meeting. Now that you know how easy it is to use AutoCreate, see what other kinds of items you can create from existing items.

Note If you prefer menu commands, you can select the item and then click Copy to Folder on the Edit menu to create a new item.

Split Outlook data

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Split your Outlook data into more than one file

This technique will stop your e-mail file from getting bloated, slow and eventually corrupting itself and dying.

Outlook by default saves all its e-mails into one file.

Prior to Outlook 2003, there was a limitation of 2 GB to your Outlook data file. Although 2 GB seems like a lot, this space can be filled quickly particularly if you receive a lot of attachments.

Once you reach that limit, there is no real warning. Outlook just slows down, e-mails start getting lost and in some cases Outlook just stops opening altogether. Retrieving your e-mails from this corrupt PST is a nightmare.

In Outlook 2003, you have the option of using the new Unicode format of Outlook data file which can hold much more data. However if you upgraded Outlook from an earlier version then chances are that you are still using the older format with the 2 GB limitation.

Irrespective of whether you are using the new or old format data file, you should split your Outlook data into at least 2 files.

You main PST file should not be used like a filing cabinet for old e-mails. Create a separate PST file to save e-mails that you want to keep for future reference. This leaves you main Outlook data file lean and mean so that Outlook is able to open up quickly.

To create a new Outlook data file:

1. Click File-New-Outlook Data File

2. Outlook 2003 Only: Outlook 2003 uses two types of Outlook data files. If you will be using the data only in Outlook 2003 or later, choose MS Outlook Personal Folders File. Otherwise choose the Outlook 97-2002 option.

3. Outlook suggests a default location for the file. I recommend that you change this to a folder that you backup regularly, possible a sub-folder in your My Documents.

4. Enter a filename and click OK to create the file.

You can create as many Personal Folder files as you need. Most users only need to create one in addition to the one that Outlook creates by default.

PST 1: Default Folder created by Outlook

PST 2: Use to store Project E-mails

You will be moving e-mails from PST 1 to PST 2 as explained later in this book.

If you have a very high volume of e-mails (particularly with large attachments) you may want to have 2 PST files for your Project E-mails, one for Active projects and one for Completed projects.

How To Activate Outlook

Monday, March 17, 2008

To continue to use all of the features of your product, you must activate the product. Microsoft Product Activation is a Microsoft anti-piracy technology designed to verify that software products are legitimately licensed.Activation works by verifying that the Product Key, which you must supply to install the product, is not in use on more personal computers than are permitted by the software

How do I activate my Microsoft Outlook programs?

When you start your Office program for the first time after installation, you are prompted to enter your Product Key, if you have not already done so during Setup.

Grace period Before you enter a valid Product Key, you can run the software up to 25 times. This is known as the grace period. During the grace period, certain features or programs may be enabled that are not included in the product you have purchased. After you enter a valid Product Key, you will see only the programs and features you have purchased.

Reduced Functionality mode After the grace period, if you have not entered a valid Product Key, the software goes into Reduced Functionality mode. In Reduced Functionality mode, your software behaves similarly to a viewer. You cannot save modifications to documents or create new documents, and functionality might be reduced. No existing files or documents are harmed in Reduced Functionality mode. After you enter your Product Key and activate your software, you will have full functionality for the programs and features you purchased.

Activate over the Internet or by phone

When you enter your valid Product Key, the Activation Wizard automatically runs. The Activation Wizard gives you two choices on how to proceed:
Activate by using the Internet The Activation Wizard automatically contacts the Microsoft licensing servers through your Internet connection. If you are using a valid Product Key that has not already been used for the allowed number of installations, your product is activated immediately.
When you activate through the Internet, your product ID (derived from the installation Product Key) is sent to Microsoft through an encrypted transfer. A response (the confirmation ID) is sent back to your computer to activate your product. If you choose to activate your product through the Internet and you are not already connected, the wizard alerts you that there is no connection.
· Activate by using the telephone You can telephone an Activation Center and activate your product with the help of a customer service representative.
Telephone activation might take longer than activation through the Internet. You should be at your computer when you call, and you should have your software Product Key available. Telephone numbers for Activation Centers vary by product license and country/region. Use the number provided on your Activation Wizard screen to call the Microsoft Activation Center.
Important Activation Center numbers are not listed in this article because there are many numbers, and the correct number for you is based on several factors. Microsoft software can be obtained under various licenses, including individual retail licenses, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) licenses, and volume licenses. Telephone contact numbers vary by license and country/region. In step 2 of the Activation Wizard, use the number provided to call the Microsoft Activation Center.
--> In the Activation Wizard, select the country/region where you reside and where you plan to use the product.
The wizard provides one or more telephone numbers.

Call the Activation Center.

The customer service representative asks you for your installation ID (displayed on your screen) and other relevant information. After your installation ID is verified, you receive a confirmation ID.
In the Activation Wizard, type the confirmation ID in the spaces provided at the bottom of the screen, and then press ENTER.
