How to Create a Virtual Hard Drive in Windows 7

Monday, February 15, 2010

Have you ever wished you had an extra Hard Disk to store files, share, or set aside as an encrypted vault? One of the new features in Windows 7 is the ability to create Virtual Hard Disks and we’ll show you how.

Create a Virtual Drive

This process creates virtual disks in the .VHD format where the minimum size is 3MB. To begin, Right-click on My Computer and select to Manage. Alternately you can type diskmgmt.msc into the Start search box and enter.

The Computer Management screen opens click on Disk Management then Action and Create VHD.

Browse to the directory you want the disk to reside, choose the size you want it to be, and select dynamic or a fixed. If you want the disk to expand in size as you add files to it, then pick Dynamically expanding. Check Fixed size if you want a specific size and for it to stay that way.

In Disk Management in Microsoft Windows you will see the virtual drive listed as unallocated space.

To begin using it you’ll need to Right-click and select Initialize Disk.

In the initialize disk box just keep MBR selected and hit OK.

Create a Volume

Now it is time to create a volume by Right-clicking the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume.

The New Simple Volume Wizard starts up and it’s just a matter of completing it.

Choose the amount of space you want to use for the volume.

Assign it a dive letter that is not currently being used.

Format the new volume as NTFS, FAT32, or FAT. Check if you want a quick format and file compression.

The wizard is complete, click on Finish.

If you have AutoPlay enabled it should pop up for you to open up your new virtual hard disk.

It will be listed with the other disks in Disk Management.

Of course you will also see it listen under My Computer.

This is a cool new feature that will let you use the disk as you would any type of real disk. You can encrypt it, share it out to other systems, store files to it…however you would use an extra disk connected to your system.

This is a cool new feature in Windows 7 that will add extra functionality and options to your current system. There are several ways you can use your VHD including making it bootable. If you have used your geek imagination and have come up with unique ways to use a VHD, leave a comment to tell us about it.

More information about events

Usually an event occurs once and can last for one day or several days, but an annual event, such as a birthday or anniversary, occurs yearly on a specific date.

  2. In the Subject box, type a description.
  3. In the Location box, enter the location.
  4. To indicate to people who are viewing your calendar that you are out of office instead of free, on the Event tab, in the Options group, click Out of Office in the Show As list.
  5. If the event lasts longer than one day, change the values in the Start time and End time boxes.

How to Schedule your tasks in Outlook

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Now that you have documented all the tasks that have been cluttering your mind, you must schedule a time to complete those tasks. Outlook offers two handy tools to get that done: Tasks and Calendar.

Each tool is useful and has its advantages. Tasks offers more tracking options, and you can set start and end dates. You can even set reminders and have things flagged a certain color when they become overdue. Calendar, on the other hand, offers a convenient way to plan your day.

In Outlook Calendar, I block out the amount of time that I want to spend on my most important task, and then record the task in that block. I continue to schedule all my tasks in this manner, making sure that I allow enough time for each task.

Life does happen. If a task takes me only fifteen minutes to complete, I schedule a half hour. If the task takes a half hour, I schedule an hour. If I finish early, I get more break time. When you schedule twice as much time to finish a task, you build in a margin of error so helpful to us humans. If you are facing any problem with computer you can get computer Help and Outlook Support

Repairing an Offline Folder file (.ost)

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

You may want to scan and repair your .ost if you:

  • Encounter a large numbers of conflict items.
  • Cannot open particular Outlook items when offline.
  • Receive unexpected synchronization error messages (as shown in the synchronization log in the Deleted Items folder).
  • Receive the message:

Unable to expand the folder. The set of folders could not be opened. Errors could have been detected in the file drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.ost. Quit all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox Repair Tool.

Note The file path specified in the message may vary depending upon the operating system you are using on your computer.

In addition, you might be able to open folders in the .ost but get synchronization error messages that do not go away. This happens when a single e-mail message is damaged and the synchronization process cannot correct it. You can use the OST Integrity Tool to fix damaged messages or to move them so you can synchronize successfully.

Important: You may need to run scanpst.exe (see the first procedure above) first if the OST Integrity Tool cannot open the .ost file.

To scan and repair the .ost file

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. On the Start menu, click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type

drive:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\LocaleID\scanost.exe

where LocaleID is the locale identifier (LCID) for your installation of Microsoft Office. For example, the LCID for English (United States) is 1033. For a list of LCIDs, see Microsoft Office Help.

  1. Click OK.
  2. Click either Scan all folders or Choose folder to scan. If you click Scan all folders, this may take several minutes.
  3. Select the Repair errors check box.
  4. Click Begin Scan.

Details of actions performed during the scan and repair are saved as a message in your Outlook Deleted Items folder with the subject "OST Integrity Check."

Outlook Mail Attachment security

Thursday, May 8, 2008

To prevent the spread of viruses from program files (considered a Level 1 threat), Microsoft Outlook automatically blocks attachments that contain file types that can run programs. These blocked file types include .exe, .bat, .com, .vbs, and .js. Your Inbox displays the paperclip icon in the Attachment column to let you know that the message has an attachment. A list of the blocked attachment files appears in the InfoBar at the top of the message.

If you try to send an attachment that has a file type extension that is on the Level 1 restricted list, you receive a message that other Outlook users may not be able to access this type of attachment.

Only an e-mail server administrator can change this default setting and unblock certain file types. This setting is often used on an organization's intranet, not on the Internet.

Data files, such as .doc, .xls, .ppt, and .txt files, are not blocked. However, you receive an Opening Mail Attachment message when you try to open an attachment.

This message gives you the opportunity to consider the safety of the file you are opening and a chance to save the file and scan it for viruses before opening it.

To be able to send any file type by using e-mail, you can use a third-party program, such as WinZip, to package files before you attach them to your e-mail message. WinZip can create a new Outlook message and attach the .zip package for you.

In your message, you can include instructions explaining how to extract the files from the package to make it easy for recipients to access the files.

Outlook Address Book security

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

The Microsoft Outlook Address Book is guarded programmatically. This helps to prevent another program from automatically accessing your Address Book or Contacts list or from sending messages on your behalf without your permission. It is very useful to allow some programs (like Microsoft ActiveSync® or Palm Desktop Support and Computer Support )to access your contact information so that you can synchronize your personal digital assistant (PDA). However, a virus or other malicious program file can use the same functionality to propagate itself. If a program attempts to access your Address Book, a warning appears on screen.

This message appears if a program tries to access your Address Book. In general, you cannot prevent this caution from appearing. However, check with your synchronization software vendor to see if recent updates to the vendor's software include interacting with Outlook in a trusted manner. This message is not displayed when Outlook interacts with trusted synchronization software.

  • Unless you clicked a command or started a program that is expected to interact with Outlook Address Book information or if you are just not sure, click No.
  • If you clicked a command or started a program that is expected to interact with Outlook Address Book information, select the Allow access for check box, and then specify the amount of time you grant access for.
